Our desert adventure starts today, and we drive out of Cairo to the Fayoum region, once the bread basket of the whole Middle East. We visit the Meidum Pyramid en-route and tour some sites in Fayoum before driving into the beautiful desert scenery of Wadi Hitan where camp under some cliffs with beautiful views over the rock formations and sands below us.
We rise this morning, and explore the World Heritage Site of the ‘Valley of the Whales’ just below us. This is acknowledged as the most important site worldwide for learning about the history of whale skeletal development, and hundreds of fossilized whale skeletons as well as mangrove roots and crab tunnels have been found in the sand. Many of these are now displayed on the sand surface and we take a walk of a few kilometers through the desert to view these. We then stop at the freshwater desert lake of Wadi Rayan, and the nearby Springs Oasis before driving through barren and rocky desert to the large depression, salt lake and villages of the Bahariya Oasis.
After breakfast will drive to see the Black desert & climb the mountain.
Next, we will travel to the village of el-Haiz and swim in the natural springs surrounded by a pristine desert, or enjoy tea and snacks while soaking your feet in the spring water canal that runs through the restaurant.
We will continue to Crystal Mountain where you can climb over the area and see some natural ancient crystals that are still embedded in the rocks. Crystal Mountain was once a giant geoid that, over the period of millions of years, was pushed up to the earth’s surface and broke open, exposing all of the crystal inside.
Next we tour off-road through the steep passes of Agabat where we will make another photo stop to capture the spectacular panoramic view of the White Desert from Agabat.
Finally we descend into the valley to the White Desert, which is known for its giant, chalk, mushroom and animal-shaped rock formations. This is where you will enjoy an amazing sunset amidst stark forests of towering white limestone figures, while your guide creates a Bedouin style camp and a delicious dinner.
You will finish your evening sleeping around a campfire or in tents — but always under an ever-changing blanket of brilliant stars.
At the early morning you will enjoy an amazing sunrise views in the White Desert before your Bedouin breakfast at the campsite. Leave the campsite and drive to Farafra oasis to enjoy a fantastic swimming experience in the hot spring of Beer Seta, then visit of the folklore Museum of Badr and old town of Farafra before heading to Bahariya Oasis where we have time to explore the centre, and bathe in one of the hot sprints nearby & explore local life of Bahariya. Overnight in the hotel.
